Have you ever tried writing something by yourself, then shared it with friends and felt like you saw your own words in a whole new way? That's what happens when we use a collaborative learning approach to writing. One that blends working on our own with talking and sharing ideas with others. Thus, we'll determine how this approach fits into the 4 phases of writing, and how it connects to both individual thinking and social conversation.

The collaborative approach follows the 4 key phases of writing: Plan-Draft-Review-Publish. Starting with phase 1, which is the plan. When planning, we might start by jotting down our thoughts individually, this is where individual writing comes in, with specific ideas we want to express based on what we know. But then we talk with others in a social dialogue to expand those plans. For example, if writing about local farming in Cavite, you might first list what you've seen yourself, then discuss with classmates to add ideas about climate or market trends. This mixes cognition (our own thinking) with metacognition (thinking about how we can make our ideas better). Next, is the 2nd phase, which is drafting. We focus mostly on putting our own thoughts into words like a specific, empirical expression that comes from our personal understanding and research. Even in a group, drafting is often an individual task because writing needs our unique voice. This is where learning happens as we turn ideas into clear sentences. Then, we have phase 3, which is reviewing. This is where social interaction really matters because we often share our drafts with peers or teachers for assessment. In this assessment, teachers will give feedback that helps us see what works and what doesn't. This generalizing theoretical reflection makes us think about writing rules and how to apply them. For example, a friend might point out that your farming essay jumps from one topic to another, so you learn to organize ideas better. Onto our last phase, which is publishing. After revising based on both your own checks and other's input, you share work with a wider audience. This final step combines the best of individual effort and social feedback that "Your voice matters but it's been strengthened by conversations with others."

In a nutshell, the collaborative approach to writing shows that we don't have to choose between working alone and working with others. The four phases from this module in section 2 "making meaning by writing" clearly guide us through the process, while individual work builds our basic skills and social dialogue helps us think more deeply about our writing. By mixing cognition with metacognition, and specific expression with general reflection, we become better writers who can share our ideas clearly with the world.
