color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Yet they designate fundamentally different relations between teacher, learner, and the object of knowledge. What is at issue in each is not simply the transmission of content, but the manner in which the relation to truth is organised.

Dogmatic teaching presents knowledge as already constituted and complete. Its characteristic gesture is assertion. The matter is stated in advance, and the learner is asked to receive, retain, and reproduce it. In such a relation, the object of knowledge does not properly appear; what appears instead is the authority of the statement. The truth of what is taught is thus mediated chiefly by the teacher’s position, and the learner’s activity is reduced to recognition in the weak sense: acknowledgement of what has already been declared.

Didactic teaching, by contrast, need not abolish authority, but it deploys authority differently. Its task is not simply to pronounce what is the case, but to bring the learner into a relation with the object such that the object can begin to disclose its own intelligibility. The teacher does not disappear; selection, framing, emphasis, and sequence remain decisive. Yet what is decisive here is that understanding is not grounded merely in the external validity of the proposition, but in a movement in which the learner is led to see why something is so.

This difference may be clarified by two elementary scenes.

In the first, a concept is defined and the student is required to grasp it in the form in which it is given. Knowledge appears as a finished result. The labour of its formation is absent, and because that labour is absent, the learner confronts the concept as something externally imposed. The relation is one of submission to a content whose necessity has not been exhibited.

In the second, examples are placed before the learner: a text, a diagram, a phenomenon, an experiment. Attention is directed toward what appears, toward recurring features, internal differences, and significant relations. The concept is not simply announced but allowed to emerge through a guided comparison of cases. What is learned is not only the result but something of the movement by which the result becomes necessary.

The contrast here is not between teaching and non-teaching, nor between authority and freedom in any simple sense. It is rather between two forms of mediation. In the dogmatic form, mediation remains external: the learner encounters the concept as a command issued by authority. In the didactic form, mediation becomes at least relatively immanent: the learner is led through the object, through its presentation, articulation, and comparison, so that thought can participate in the object’s determination rather than merely submit to an already completed statement.

For that reason, didactic teaching is more closely aligned with showing than with telling. To show is not merely to exhibit an example alongside a verbal explanation. It is to arrange the pedagogical situation such that the learner’s own act of attending, distinguishing, and relating becomes constitutive of understanding. Showing is therefore not the opposite of conceptuality; it is one way of bringing conceptuality into being. What is shown is not a bare particular, but a field of determinations out of which the universal can be grasped.

This is why the distinction between didactic and dogmatic discourse is itself best introduced didactically. If one begins by simply defining the two terms, one risks reproducing the very problem under discussion: the concept is asserted before its necessity has become evident. But if one first places two pedagogical situations alongside one another, and if one allows their internal difference to become visible through comparison, then the concept emerges as the articulation of a distinction already recognised in the experience of reading. The exposition thus enacts the very principle it describes.

In this stronger sense, didactic practice is not reducible to instruction in the narrow, contemporary sense of efficient content delivery. It names a form of pedagogy in which thought is led, not coerced; in which authority functions, not as the final ground of truth, but as that which organises the conditions under which truth may become intelligible. Dogmatism demands assent prior to understanding. Didactic teaching, at its best, seeks to generate understanding such that assent, if it follows, does so on the basis of insight rather than mere deference.

The difference, then, is ultimately epistemological as much as pedagogical. Dogmatic teaching treats truth as something to be received from without. Didactic teaching treats truth as something that must be mediated through the learner’s encounter with the object. It does not deny that knowledge has determinate content, nor that teaching requires guidance and discipline. What it denies is that understanding can be reduced to repetition. To teach didactically is to make the object speak in such a way that thought can follow its movement. It is to show, not in place of conceptual determination, but as the condition under which conceptual determination becomes living rather than inert.
