These are spaces where students share ideas using text, emojis, videos, voice messages, and links to websites. For example, when we work on group projects, we don’t just type our ideas. Sometimes we send short video explanations, voice notes, or even create small presentations and share them. Even the use of emojis or GIFs can help show our feelings or reactions to ideas. All of these ways of communicating work together to help us understand each other better.

A multimodal analysis of this communication is very useful. It helps teachers understand how students are learning and expressing ideas in ways that are not only written. For example, some students might find it hard to explain their thoughts in a long message, but they can make a short video or record themselves talking to show their understanding. Teachers can also see how students interact with each other, ask questions, and respond to feedback in these spaces. This shows that learning is not only about writing the right answer on paper—it is also about sharing and understanding ideas in many different ways.

This is different from traditional literacy, which focuses mainly on reading and writing. Traditional literacy looks at how well a person can read text or write answers, but it does not consider other ways people communicate. Multimodal literacy values all these different ways, like using technology, videos, and even emojis, to share meaning. In today’s world, students are constantly using different tools to communicate, so understanding these forms is very important. It helps students express themselves better and makes learning more connected to the way we live and communicate every day
