An ePortfolio is a digital collection of a learner’s work that documents progress, reflections, and achievements over time. Unlike traditional assessments that measure performance at a single point, ePortfolios emphasize growth and continuous learning. Because they are stored online and can be accessed anytime and anywhere, they reflect the principle of ubiquitous learning, learning that extends beyond the physical classroom and formal schedule (Cope & Kalantzis, 2009).

In my experience teaching English, I have seen how students often focus only on grades and final outputs. When I began exploring the idea of portfolios, I realized that learning becomes more meaningful when students can revisit their drafts, revisions, and reflections. For example, instead of submitting a final essay and moving on, students can upload their first draft, peer feedback, revised version, and a short reflection explaining what they improved. This process encourages metacognition, which is essential in language learning. According to Barrett (2007), ePortfolios support reflective practice by allowing learners to connect evidence of learning with personal growth. As an English teacher, I find this especially powerful because writing is developmental; improvement happens over time, and students need to see that progress.

Pedagogically, ePortfolios align with authentic and learner-centered approaches. They shift assessment from simple compliance to intentional reflection. They also support lifelong and lifewide learning because students can continue building their portfolios beyond one subject or semester. In a digital era where education increasingly happens across platforms and contexts, ePortfolios provide continuity. For me, they represent a move away from short-term performance toward long-term development, which I believe is at the heart of meaningful education.
