While we often examine Self-Regulated Learning, we rarely focus on what actually initiates self-regulation in the first place. Epistemic curiosity refers to the learner’s awareness of a gap in knowledge and the intentional effort to close that gap through inquiry, reflection, and strategy use. It is not simply interest in a topic; rather, it is a metacognitive recognition that “I do not fully understand this,” followed by deliberate cognitive action. As John Dewey explained in How We Think, reflective thinking begins with doubt or perplexity. Later, George Loewenstein described curiosity as an “information gap” that motivates learning behavior. In digital learning ecologies, this gap can be intentionally designed to stimulate deeper engagement.

For example, in a MOOC on instructional design, instead of immediately presenting theoretical explanations, an instructor might begin with a complex classroom scenario and ask learners to predict possible outcomes before introducing the formal concept. Students post their hypotheses in the discussion forum, compare reasoning with peers, and then revisit their responses after studying the theory. This process activates awareness of misunderstanding, encourages strategic actions such as rewatching lectures or consulting readings, and promotes reflective revision of ideas. A simple visual model—Knowledge Gap → Question Generation → Strategy Use → Reflection → Conceptual Revision—could be embedded as an infographic to illustrate this cycle.
