Ubiquitous learning refers to learning that can happen anytime, anywhere, and through any device or medium. Powered by digital technologies, it breaks down the traditional boundaries of the classroom — the fixed time slot, the single physical space, and the one-size-fits-all pace. In a ubiquitous learning environment, knowledge is no longer confined to a textbook or a lecture hall. It surrounds us, embedded in everyday tools, platforms, and interactions.

Blended learning is perhaps one of the most accessible entry points into understanding ubiquitous learning in practice. At its core, blended learning combines face-to-face instruction with online or digital learning experiences. A student might attend a classroom session on Monday, engage with an interactive video lesson on Tuesday evening from home, and collaborate with peers on a shared digital document over the weekend — all as part of the same course.

This flexibility is precisely what makes blended learning a powerful example of ubiquitous learning in action. It distributes learning across multiple contexts and removes the assumption that meaningful education only happens when a teacher and student are physically present together at the same time.

When we think about learning ecologies, we are thinking about the entire ecosystem in which learning occurs — the tools, the spaces, the relationships, and the rhythms of engagement. Blended learning enriches this ecosystem by layering digital and physical experiences together. It allows learners to revisit concepts asynchronously, engage at their own pace, and bring real-world experiences back into the classroom for deeper discussion.

Importantly, blended learning also shifts agency toward the learner. Instead of being a passive recipient of content delivered at a fixed time, learners can navigate their own pathways through material, pausing, rewinding, exploring links, and connecting ideas across different contexts. This is where learners autonomy comes into play, engage to materials and responsibility for their own learning.
