Authentic Literacy Pedagogy Through Process Writing

One example of authentic literacy pedagogy that I experienced personally is process writing. Unlike traditional, didactic approaches where the teacher gives a topic and expects a polished essay right away, process writing emphasizes the steps of writing—brainstorming, drafting, revising, and sharing. I remember in school when my teacher encouraged us to keep journals and workshop our drafts with classmates. At first, I found it unusual because I was used to being graded only on the final product. But over time, I realized how valuable it was to see writing as a journey rather than a single task.

The strength of process writing is that it makes literacy feel real and connected to everyday life. Instead of memorizing rules, I was encouraged to express my own ideas, experiment with language, and refine my work through feedback. Peer review sessions helped me see how others interpreted my words, and that gave me confidence to adjust my writing for clarity and impact. It felt empowering to know that my voice mattered, not just my grammar.

Of course, there are weaknesses too. Process writing takes time, and not every student has the patience or motivation to go through multiple drafts. Sometimes I felt overwhelmed by the constant revisions, and I missed the straightforwardness of didactic lessons where the teacher simply told us what was correct. For learners who prefer structure, process writing can feel messy and uncertain.

Compared to didactic pedagogy, which is teacher-centered and focused on transmitting knowledge, authentic pedagogy like process writing is learner-centered and focused on meaning-making. It values creativity, collaboration, and personal expression. For me, the difference was clear: didactic pedagogy taught me rules, but process writing taught me how to use language to communicate my own ideas. That shift made literacy feel alive and personal.
