Didactic Pedagogy Through Khan Academy

One example of didactic pedagogy that has influenced me personally is Khan Academy, the online learning platform. I first used it when I was struggling with math in high school, and I remember how straightforward the lessons felt compared to classroom lectures. The platform is built around short instructional videos, followed by practice exercises that reinforce the concepts. It is very much a teacher-centered approach, where the learner listens, absorbs, and then applies the material in a structured way.

The strength of Khan Academy lies in its clarity and accessibility. The explanations are broken down into simple steps, and the repetition of examples helps solidify understanding. I appreciated how I could pause, rewind, and replay lessons until I fully grasped the topic. This gave me a sense of control over my learning, even though the pedagogy itself was quite traditional. It reminded me of sitting in a classroom, except the teacher was always available on my screen whenever I needed them.

However, the limitations of this didactic approach became clear to me over time. While Khan Academy helped me master formulas and procedures, it did not always encourage deeper exploration or creativity. The focus was on correct answers rather than open-ended thinking. I sometimes felt that I was memorizing steps instead of truly engaging with the subject. In collaborative settings, I missed the chance to discuss ideas with peers or apply knowledge in real-world contexts.

Reflecting on this, I see both the value and the limits of didactic pedagogy. It provides structure, clarity, and consistency, which are essential for building foundational skills. But it also needs to be balanced with interactive and inquiry-based approaches that foster critical thinking. For me, Khan Academy was a lifeline, yet it also showed me that learning is richer when it goes beyond instruction into exploration.
