ql-align-justify">Functional literacy focuses on practical competence for everyday life of the capacity of a person to engage in activities in which literacy is required for effective functioning. One sample classroom practice with an application of functional literacies is a job interview. Preparing for a job interview requires learners to create their resume or application form. By creating a resume, learners are learning to write a proper resume which makes this practice as a practical skill necessary for their future career. In resume writing, learners are taught to analyze the parts and how to make an outline of the resume. This includes their personal information, education, work experience, and skills. Learners are also required to provide their educational background by listing their schools attended, degrees earned and academic achievements. Some even required to submit two documents, the curriculum vitae and the resume. Resume writing is a good practice for assessing oneself and skills. As well as the job interview because it provides workplace-ready skills which makes it functional literacy.

In the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum in the Philippines, they are also preparing students for their future careers as they have a subject where they are assigning students on an OJT or on-the-job training. In an OJT or on-the-job training, students are assigned in a workplace that is aligned on their chosen academic tracks, the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or STEM, Accountancy, Business, and Management or known as ABM, Humanities and Social Sciences or HUMSS, General Academic Strand or GAS, and lastly Technical Vocational Livelihood or known as TVL. So these academic tracks are pathways for students to prepare themselves for specific college degrees or immediate employment. We can also say that this is also a part of functional literacy as they prepare students for employment and real-life responsibilities. Functional literacy aims to prepare students in their three macro skills (reading, writing, speaking) and numeracy skills so that they can use this knowledge in real life situations.
