The Example

In a critical literacy lesson, a teacher gives students a toy catalog. Instead of just reading the names of toys or checking prices (functional literacy), the students look at how the toys are marketed.

The teacher asks: "Why are the science kits and trucks in the 'blue' section with boys? Why are the dolls and kitchens in the 'pink' section with girls?" The students then look for children who look like them. If they don't see kids with disabilities or kids from different ethnic backgrounds, they discuss why that is. To finish the lesson, students design their own "inclusive" catalog page that welcomes everyone.

Analysis of the Approach

• Strengths: This helps students see that advertisements are not "neutral." It teaches them to question why society puts people into boxes. It makes them smarter consumers who don't just believe everything they see.

• Weaknesses: Some students might find it hard to look for "hidden" meanings if they are still struggling to read the basic words. It also takes more time than a standard reading lesson.

Comparison with Functional Literacy

Functional literacy is about the basic "how-to" of life. It focuses on skills like reading a map, following a recipe, or filling out a job form. The goal is to make sure a person can function in society and follow directions correctly.

Critical literacy is about the "why." It assumes every text has a bias. It doesn't just want you to follow the directions; it wants you to ask who wrote the directions and if they are fair to everyone.

Similarities and Differences:

• Similarity: Both require you to understand the words on the page. You have to be able to read the catalog before you can critique it.

• Difference: Functional literacy is about fitting in (reading the price). Critical literacy is about speaking out (asking why the ad is unfair). One is about information; the other is about power.
