In short, authentic literacy pedagogy focuses on real communication and real tasks. Authentic literacy pedagogy is also known as progressive pedagogy. For further information, it is recognized that this approach is student-centered and constructivist. This is in contrast to didactic pedagogy as it is a teacher-centered learning approach in which the teacher gives the students the rules first for a given topic before giving examples of those rules in action. In the deductive instruction, teachers teach the rules first before giving an example. While in authentic literacy pedagogy, it is shown that using this approach makes the students active and engaged learners as they create their own individualised knowledge. It means students have an active role in their learning process. Authentic teaching literacy pedagogy greatly values knowledge acquisition in an experiential way.

According to Donovan, Bransford, & Pellegrino (1999), authentic learning in education is an instruction that allows students to meaningfully explore the concepts and relationships in context that involves gaining real-life scenarios, which is relevant to the learners. The learning in this approach is an active process meaning the students are the ones who are moving and exploring the world around them. For instance in a sample classroom application, a good example of learners learning by their own is book club. Learners will be grouped and discuss the provided literary work, with this strategy learners can discuss what they interpret in the provided literary work and explore the elements on their own. Book Club as a strategy to make students have an active learning process definitely helps as it is engaging and fun. It is also helpful as it is exposing students to literary works that have good quality texts. Learners can also gain appreciation by providing materials that can relate to learners.
