As online learning environments expand across global platforms such as Scholar and Coursera, the need for meaningful differentiated instruction becomes increasingly urgent. Much of the conversation around differentiated learning focuses on personalized pacing, adaptive technologies, or learning analytics. While these approaches are valuable, they often center cognitive differences while overlooking cultural identity as a key dimension of learner diversity. One concept that deserves further attention in our e-Learning Ecologies discussions is Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP). This framework expands differentiated learning beyond ability levels and instead positions culture, language, and lived experience as central to instructional design.

Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, advanced by scholars such as Django Paris and H. Samy Alim, builds on the earlier work of Gloria Ladson-Billings’ culturally relevant pedagogy. CSP argues that education should not simply respond to student diversity but actively sustain and affirm students’ cultural practices and identities. Rather than viewing difference as something to remediate, CSP views diversity as intellectual capital.

In digital learning ecologies, this approach aligns with socially constructed and participatory models of knowledge-building. A MOOC, by design, brings together learners from multiple nations, languages, and socioeconomic contexts. Yet many courses still rely on standardized case studies, Western-centric examples, and uniform assessment models.

An example of CSP in practice within a MOOC might involve replacing a single global assignment with localized inquiry. For instance, in a sustainability course, learners could investigate environmental challenges specific to their own communities and present findings through digital storytelling (video, podcast, or infographic). A learner in Kenya might analyze drought patterns, while a learner in Norway might examine renewable energy transitions. Through structured peer exchange, these local narratives form a global knowledge network.

This model differentiates instruction not by simplifying content, but by diversifying entry points. It also encourages multilingual expression and culturally embedded problem-solving strategies. Such an approach aligns with multiliteracies theory (The New London Group, 1996), which emphasizes the importance of diverse modes of communication in digital environments.

Differentiated learning in global online environments must move beyond adaptive algorithms and pacing tools. Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy reframes differentiation as equity-centered design—ensuring that learners’ identities are not peripheral but foundational to the educational experience. In MOOCs and digital ecologies, CSP transforms diversity from a logistical challenge into a pedagogical strength. By sustaining culture rather than standardizing it, we create learning communities that are not only inclusive, but intellectually richer and more globally connected.
