This approach is particularly valuable in Filipino classrooms, where texts often reflect cultural, social, and political realities relevant to students’ lives.

A concrete example of critical literacy in practice can be observed in Grade 11 Filipino lessons on media representation. Students are provided with Filipino news articles, opinion pieces, and social media posts discussing issues such as youth unemployment and community challenges. Rather than summarizing the texts, learners analyze whose voices are emphasized, whose perspectives are silenced, and how language shapes perceptions of social groups. Through guided discussions, students are asked questions like “Paano inilalarawan ang kabataan sa teksto?” and “Ano ang implikasyon ng ganitong paglalarawan?” These questions encourage learners to reflect critically on the text and its social implications. At this point, the deliberate use of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) enhances the process. Learners are not merely recalling information or summarizing content; they are analyzing the underlying assumptions, evaluating the effects of language choices, and creating counter-narratives that present alternative perspectives. By integrating HOTS, students actively engage in higher-level cognitive processes such as evaluation, synthesis, and creation, which deepens both their understanding of the text and their awareness of social issues.

Subsequently, students write reflective essays or counter-narratives that challenge dominant perspectives, allowing them to voice alternative viewpoints or highlight marginalized experiences. This writing process exemplifies the creation component of HOTS, encouraging learners to construct meaningful responses that require critical thought, problem-solving, and imagination.

The strengths of critical literacy pedagogy include promoting higher-order thinking, student agency, and awareness of social issues. Learners develop the ability to critique texts, consider multiple perspectives, and participate as informed members of society. Additionally, the approach makes Filipino language learning meaningful by connecting classroom texts with real-life contexts. However, critical literacy also presents challenges. Students with limited language skills may struggle to analyze texts effectively, and teachers must be skilled facilitators capable of guiding discussions, providing scaffolding, and offering constructive feedback. Functional literacy emphasizes decoding, comprehension, and practical writing skills for daily use, while critical literacy prioritizes reflection, social critique, and transformative action. Incorporating HOTS into critical literacy ensures that students progress beyond functional skill mastery toward complex reasoning, evaluative thinking, and creative expression, bridging the gap between practical language use and critical engagement.
