My students use these platforms almost every day. They are not just reading words; they are also watching videos, looking at pictures, listening to sounds, and reading captions. This shows that communication today involves many modes, not just writing. Students comprehend meaning through images, videos, sound, and text combined. For instance, many of my students watch YouTube videos to learn various things. Some watch videos to understand math problems, while others learn how to cook, draw, or fix something. In these videos, students listen to the speaker’s voice, watch the actions, and read the text on the screen. The speaker’s tone can help students feel relaxed and confident. The visuals clarify the steps. This aids students’ understanding better than only reading from a textbook. This demonstrates how video, sound, and text work together to enhance learning. Another example is Instagram. My students often post pictures with captions. For example, a student might share a photo after finishing a big project with the caption, “Finally done!” The smile emoji, the caption, and the picture together express happiness and relief. If we only read the caption without seeing the picture and emoji, the meaning wouldn’t be complete. This illustrates that students use various modes to express their feelings. A multimodal analysis is helpful because it allows teachers to see how students communicate in real life. It reveals that students do not only use writing; they also use images, videos, and sound. Teachers can use this knowledge to design lessons where students create presentations, videos, or posters. This can make learning more engaging and accessible. This differs from traditional literacy, which mainly focuses on reading books and writing essays. Traditional literacy does not include images, videos, or emojis. However, today's students live in a digital world where multimodal communication is very common. In conclusion, multimodal communication plays a significant role in my students’ lives, and understanding it can help teachers teach more effectively.
