ql-align-justify">A 2023 secondary education study provides a clear illustration of critical literacy pedagogy in action, demonstrating how educators use diverse texts to teach critical literacies and enable students to challenge presumptions in globalized classrooms. To help students understand the connections between language, power, and identity, literacy teachers in this instance used multimodal texts, cultural contexts, and reflective discussion (Creely et al., 2023). Critical literacy pedagogy places students in the role of active interpreters and social agents. In particular, students engaged with texts not only to understand their surface meaning but also to question whose voices were represented, what perspectives were silenced, and how social contexts shaped those texts (Creely et al., 2023). The traditional functional literacy pedagogy, which emphasizes mastering decoding, comprehension, and practical language use for daily tasks like following instructions or reading informational texts, stands in stark contrast to this approach (Rizqiani et al., 2023). Functional literacy primarily develops the practical reading and writing skills necessary for academic and professional success, while critical literacy pedagogy goes beyond basic comprehension to break down ideological messages and foster social critique.

The critical literacy example's primary strength is that it encourages student empowerment and self-reflection, assisting students in identifying the social power dynamics present in texts and developing socially conscious viewpoints. However, because teachers must facilitate open-ended discussion and allow for thoughtful interpretation, it has drawbacks such as increased demands on their expertise, planning time, and classroom facilitation. On the other hand, functional literacy may not have the depth required to prepare students for critically interacting with societal texts and power structures, but its strength is in its easy assessment and clear, measurable skill outcomes. Therefore, although literacy development is addressed by both strategies, their goals, levels of detail, and sociopolitical engagement are essentially different. It is crucial to keep in mind that critical literacy is more than just academic proficiency; it aids students in comprehending the world and their role in it.
