Functional literacy emphasizes the ability to read, write and communicate in ways that are meaningful and useful in everyday life. Rather than concentrating only on grammar rules or isolated sentence construction, this pedagogy highlights the purpose of texts and the contexts in which they are used (UNESCO, 2004). In Filipino subject areas, functional literacy becomes especially relevant because language is closely tied to culture, identity and lived experience. Through this approach, learners are not only taught how to write correctly but also why they write and for whom their writing is intended.

A concrete example of functional literacies pedagogy in practice is the teaching of reflective essay writing in Filipino. In this activity, students are asked to write a Reflective Essay (Replektibong Sanaysay) about a real-life experience, such as participating in a community clean-up drive, adjusting to online learning or helping their family during times of difficulty. This aligns with the Philippine K to 12 Filipino curriculum, which emphasizes meaningful communication and authentic language use in real-life contexts (Department of Education, 2016). Instead of focusing solely on grammatical accuracy, the lesson begins by discussing the purpose of a reflective essay, which is to express personal insights, emotions, and lessons learned from experience.

Students analyze sample reflective essays written in Filipino and identify common features such as personal voice, logical organization and thoughtful reflection. This practice reflects functional language theory, which views language as a resource for making meaning based on social purpose and context (Halliday, 1994). Through guided discussion and writing activities, learners understand that effective writing depends on how well the text fulfills its intended function.

The strength of this approach lies in its relevance to learners’ real lives. Students see writing not merely as an academic task but as a meaningful way to reflect on experiences and communicate insights. Functional literacy also supports critical thinking, as learners evaluate their actions and personal growth through writing (Hyland, 2003). Writing in Filipino further allows students to express ideas more authentically, particularly when dealing with culturally grounded experiences.

However, challenges remain. Some learners may find reflective writing difficult, especially if they are more accustomed to rigid, formula-based writing tasks. In addition, assessing reflective essays can be complex because reflection is subjective. Clear rubrics that balance reflection, coherence, and language use are therefore necessary.

Overall, teaching reflective essay writing in Filipino through functional literacy pedagogy equips learners with practical communication skills that extend beyond the classroom and into real-world situations.
