Finding an Example: The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales

The Stanford-Binet test is one of the most famous examples of an intelligence test. It originated from Alfred Binet’s work in France but was "Americanized" by Lewis Terman at Stanford University. It operates on the paradigm of "Ability Testing," calculating a score (IQ) by comparing a child's "mental age" to their actual "chronological age." It uses tasks like pattern recognition, memory recalls, and verbal analogies to identify a student’s "innate" cognitive potential.

Strengths and Weaknesses: A Teacher's Analysis

As an educator at Sanctuary Christian Academy in the Philippines, I see both the technical utility and the deep social dangers of this approach.

Strengths: In specific clinical settings, these tests can be appropriate for identifying intellectual disabilities or extreme learning gaps that require specialized medical intervention. They provide a standardized "baseline" that can help secure resources for students who need extra support.
Weaknesses: The primary weakness is the "Assumed Ceiling." Intelligence testing often assumes that a student has a fixed "native" capacity that cannot be changed. Furthermore, as Mary Kalantzis noted in our lectures, these tests are often culture-bound. A student in Ozamiz City might struggle with questions involving "snow" or "Western household items," not because they lack intelligence, but because they lack that specific cultural exposure.

Intelligence vs. Knowledge: The Paradigm Shift

The difference between testing intelligence and testing knowledge is the difference between looking at "hardware" versus "software." Intelligence testing tries to measure the machine's capacity; knowledge testing measures what the machine has actually produced and learned.

I believe that for everyday classroom practice, Knowledge Testing (Criterion-Referenced) is much more appropriate. It allows us to see exactly what a student has mastered and where they need help. Relying on the "Bell Curve" logic of intelligence testing can be "invidious," as Bill Cope mentioned, because it labels students as "mediocre" or "slow" based on a single number. This ignores the Flynn Effect—the proven fact that students get "smarter" the more we stimulate and teach them through quality curriculum.
