The message sounded very close to what I want for my Grade 6 pupils that they become critical thinkers, responsible citizens, and not just children who memorize answers for tests. The idea of decongesting the curriculum and focusing on foundational skills made me feel that maybe, finally, we would have time to teach for understanding and not just for compliance. On paper, the policy clearly reflects transformative/reflexive pedagogy. It talks about meaningful learning, real-life application, and developing learners who can think and participate in society. As a teacher, this resonates with my belief that education should change how pupils see the world, not just how they answer worksheets.

But in my daily classroom experience, I still find myself slipping into didactic/mimetic practices. With a large class, limited time, and the pressure to finish competencies, I sometimes return to explaining lessons while pupils listen and copy notes. It is not because I want to teach that way, but because it feels like the fastest way to “cover” what is required. In those moments, the beautiful vision of MATATAG becomes another checklist. There are days, however, when I see its authentic/synthetic potential. When I let my pupils work in groups, relate Science topics to their surroundings, or share their own observations from home, I notice they become more engaged and confident. They ask questions, they connect ideas, and they remember the lesson longer. Those small moments make me feel that the policy is not empty—it just needs space and support to be fully lived out.

For me, MATATAG is not lacking in substance, but it is still in transition. The vision is transformative, my practice is sometimes didactic, and the authentic learning happens in between.
