Functional literacies pedagogy emphasizes practical, context-embedded literacy skills for real-world use, often through explicit teaching of text genres like procedures and reports. One example of the activity-based genre pedagogy implemented in an English Club at a Hong Kong secondary school for low-proficiency EFL students with learning disabilities.

This program, which is a part of a collaborative research project, targeted 32 students aged 11-18 that are struggling with writing organization and mechanics. Using a “teaching-learning cycle”, teachers first showed students how professional texts are built, then wrote a story together as a class, and finally let students write their own. To make these lessons stick, students did hands-on activities like making Halloween masks to learn “how-to” instructions or tasting pizza to practice descriptive vocabulary for reports. By using clear steps and even switching to Cantonese when needed, the program turned hands-on fun into a simple way to master the rules of good writing.

The approach excels in scaffolding for challenged learners, blending physical activities with explicit genre deconstruction to make abstract literacy concrete and motivating, and students “live the text” through real contexts, boosting engagement and rhetorical awareness. It addressed specific needs like poor organization by providing structured cycles, vocabulary clustering, yielding improved text production and enjoyment. Linking to everyday EFL curricula enhanced transferability, with teachers adopting it school-wide. On the other hand, time constraints limited repetition, hindering deeper vocabulary mastery and flexible application as students needed more sessions for independence. Heavy reliance on teacher-led modeling and bilingual code-switching risks dependency, potentially delaying full autonomy without extended practice. Context-specific elements may not generalize easily to diverse cultural settings, and scaling for larger classes could dilute personalization.

Overall, this exemplifies functional literacies’ power in equipping marginalized learners with powerful text forms for educational success, though hybrid adaptations are key for broader efficacy.
