The students had diverse cultural settings and circumstances.

Description of the Project.

The project was intended to target a particular Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) proposed by the United Nations. In the case given, the SDG was "Clean Water and Sanitation" (SDG 6). The students had to find a water problem within their communities and come up with a sustainable solution to the problem. The students worked together online, using video conferencing, shared documents, and online discussion rooms.

Dynamics of Diversity

Cultural Perspectives: Cultural viewpoints were unique to each group of students. For instance, cultural ideas from India included conserving water in a manner low in cost but effective, whereas South African viewpoints covered the apartheid regime’s effect on a large proportion of citizens in relation to access to water. Technological viewpoints came from America.

Socioeconomic Circumstances: The socioeconomic circumstances of the students were quite different. The Indian students, the South African students, or the American students had a direct understanding regarding water scarcity in their troughs, whereas the American students had a theoretical understanding. This created a dynamic to discuss the socioeconomic aspects of water.

Communications Challenges: Language differences as well as variations in communications styles created early challenges.
