Darwin was able to memorize long passages in school, yet he felt his learning was empty because it did not connect to his curiosity and love for science. I see a similar pattern when I rely too much on lecture. For example, when I introduce the water cycle or the digestive system, I begin with a short, direct explanation so my pupils can learn the correct terms and sequence. This part is appropriate because it gives them structure, especially for those who need clear guidance and struggle with reading. It also saves time and prevents misconceptions. In this way, didactic teaching becomes a helpful starting point.

But I have learned that if I continue talking for the whole period, my pupils become passive some just copy from the board, others lose focus, and the lesson is easily forgotten. This is when didactic pedagogy becomes anachronistic for me, because it does not match the needs of today’s learners who learn better by doing, discussing, and exploring. When I shift to group work, simple investigations, labeling diagrams, or role-playing how food moves in the body, I see their energy change. Even the quiet pupils participate, and those who are not strong in recitation begin to shine. Like Darwin, they understand more when learning becomes active and meaningful.

Because of this, I now use didactic teaching only as a guide at the beginning of the lesson, not the whole method. My goal is that my classroom will not be a “blank” experience where pupils only memorize and forget, but a place where they can connect ideas, ask questions, and discover their own strengths. In balancing short explanations with hands-on and collaborative activities, I feel that I am teaching not just for recall, but for real understanding and curiosity.
