Many students and young people also use it for entertainment, information, and even learning. TikTok is not just about watching videos. It is a space where people create and share content using different modes of communication at the same time. These include spoken words, written captions, music, sound effects, facial expressions, gestures, filters, and visual editing. Because of this, TikTok is a strong example of multimodal communication in everyday life.

In TikTok videos, meaning is not created by words alone. For example, a short video about mental health may include background music to create emotion, subtitles to highlight key points, and images or facial expressions to show feelings. Even the way a video is edited, such as quick cuts or slow motion, can affect how the message is understood. Hashtags and comments also add another layer of meaning because they connect the video to wider conversations. All these elements work together to communicate ideas. A multimodal analysis of TikTok can be very useful because it helps us understand how meaning is constructed beyond just written text. Instead of focusing only on what is being said, we also examine how music, visuals, and layout influence interpretation. For example, the same message can feel serious or funny depending on the tone of voice and background music. By analyzing these elements, we become more aware of how the media can shape opinions and emotions. This is especially important today because many young people get information from social media. Understanding multimodal communication can help students become more critical and responsible users of digital platforms. When compared to traditional notions of literacy, multimodal literacy is broader. Traditional literacy usually focuses on reading and writing printed text. It values grammar, spelling, and comprehension of written materials. While these skills are still important, they are not enough in today’s digital world. Multimodal literacy recognizes that communication now happens through images, videos, audio, and design, not just written words. According to Kress (2010), communication in the modern world involves multiple modes working together, and meaning is shaped by how these modes are combined. This shows that literacy is no longer limited to books and essays.

TikTok is an important site of multimodal communication in my life and in the lives of many students. Through a multimodal analysis, we can better understand how different elements work together to create meaning. Compared to traditional literacy, multimodal literacy expands our understanding of communication in the digital age. It prepares us to be more critical, creative, and aware in how we consume and produce content.
