A person or family's social and economic standing in society is referred to as their socioeconomic status (SES), which is commonly determined by their occupation, income, and educational attainment. While students from lower socioeconomic origins could have less access to these resources, students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds frequently have more access to literature, dependable internet, tutoring, secure study areas, and enrichment activities.

This discrepancy has nothing to do with motivation or intelligence. It concerns the availability of resources and opportunities that influence educational experiences both before and during schooling.

Socioeconomic status profoundly shapes educational experiences because it influences not only the material resources available to learners but also their exposure to language, cultural capital, expectations, and social networks that support academic success, and according to Lev Vygotsky, learning is fundamentally a social process that develops through interaction with more knowledgeable others and through access to cultural tools such as language, technology, and shared practices, which means that when students grow up in environments where educational conversations, books, digital devices, and enrichment opportunities are limited, their cognitive development may be constrained by the absence of scaffolding and guided participation rather than by any inherent limitation in ability;
