Intrinsic motivation refers to the internal desire of learners to engage in learning activities because these activities are personally meaningful, interesting or satisfying. In metacognitive learning, intrinsic motivation functions as a central driver that supports learners in planning their learning goals, monitoring their understanding and evaluating the effectiveness of their strategies. When learners are intrinsically motivated, they are more likely to think about how they learn, why certain strategies work and what adjustments are needed to improve performance. This process strengthens self-regulated learning and promotes deeper understanding rather than surface memorization.

Educational research consistently shows that intrinsic motivation enhances persistence, cognitive engagement and reflective thinking. According to Self-Determination Theory, intrinsic motivation grows when learners experience autonomy, competence and relevance in learning tasks (Ryan & Deci, 2000). These conditions encourage learners to take ownership of their learning and to actively reflect on their progress. In digital learning environments, intrinsic motivation becomes even more important because learners often need to manage their time, attention and learning strategies independently.

A real-world example of intrinsic motivation can be observed among community writers and content creators who voluntarily develop blogs, podcasts, or local narratives. These individuals often plan their learning goals, seek feedback from audiences, and revise their work based on reflection rather than external rewards. Their motivation to improve comes from personal fulfillment and purpose, which naturally leads to metacognitive behaviors such as self-assessment and strategic revision. In Filipino education, intrinsic motivation can be effectively developed through culturally meaningful learning tasks. For example, in a Filipino subject class focusing on Florante at Laura, students may be asked to create reflective journals that connect the themes of injustice, love and resilience to present social realities in their communities. Rather than focusing solely on grades, learners are encouraged to reflect on why these themes matter to them and how their interpretations evolve. Through this process, students plan their responses, monitor their understanding of the text and evaluate the clarity of their ideas. Research on Filipino language instruction emphasizes that meaningful content and learner relevance significantly increase engagement and motivation which in turn improves learning outcomes (Bernal & Palma, 2025).

The Department of Education further reinforces learner-centered and reflective learning approaches through its policy guidelines on the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum. DepEd Order No. 010, s. 2024 emphasizes that instruction should be meaningful, relevant and responsive to learners’ contexts, while encouraging independence, collaboration and active participation in learning. These principles directly support intrinsic motivation by allowing learners to exercise autonomy, reflect on their learning progress and find personal value in academic tasks. When intrinsic motivation is intentionally embedded in instructional design, learners are more likely to regulate their own learning, engage thoughtfully with content and sustain interest across both physical and digital learning environments. Such conditions promote metacognitive growth as students continuously plan, monitor and evaluate their understanding while developing habits essential for lifelong learning.
