Collaborative intelligence refers to the shared cognitive effort of learners and educators to construct meaning collaboratively, solve problems and deepen understanding through interactive knowledge building. Within this context, Socratic dialogue emerges as a valuable pedagogical approach that fosters collaborative intelligence by engaging students in sustained inquiry, reflective questioning and collective reasoning. Socratic dialogue depends on open‑ended, probing questions that lead learners to justify responses, explore assumptions and co‑construct understanding through dialogue rather than passive reception of information. Research in educational settings suggests that structured questioning strategies play a significant role in enhancing student engagement, critical thinking and active learning. In a study of Department of Education teachers in the Philippines, educators reported that open‑ended and probing questioning techniques stimulated learners’ critical thinking and strengthened engagement (Somoray et al., 2024).

A practical application of Socratic dialogue in Filipino education can be illustrated through a junior high Filipino literature class. Suppose students are analyzing a chapter from the novel Noli Me Tangere by José Rizal. Instead of summarizing events, the teacher facilitates dialogue by asking reflective questions such as: “What do you think Rizal is trying to say about kapwa (shared identity and empathy) in this scene?” or “How does the character’s choice reflect broader social issues in Philippine society?” Students respond thoughtfully, reference the text and engage with peers’ insights. Follow‑up questions encourage them to clarify their thinking and examine alternative interpretations. This iterative exchange exemplifies collaborative intelligence because learners work together to deepen understanding, build connections, and refine conceptual knowledge.

In blended or online classrooms, Socratic dialogue can be supported with digital tools such as Padlet or Flipgrid, where learners post responses and interact through multimedia reflections. These platforms allow students to revisit peer ideas, respond in multiple modes (text, video, audio), and engage in meaningful dialogue that strengthens collective reasoning.

Research indicates that dialogic and inquiry‑based methods such as Socratic questioning improve learner engagement, collaborative reasoning, and critical thinking across disciplines (e.g., Socratic dialogue in vocational education) (Thinking Skills and Creativity, 2023).

Socratic dialogue, when intentionally applied in Filipino classrooms, enhances collaborative intelligence by encouraging active participation, respectful discourse, and shared meaning making. It shifts the role of learners from passive receivers to co‑creators of knowledge, aligning well with contemporary goals of deeper learning and interactive engagement.
