Many learners are struggling when it comes to their studies because they rely on passive methods like re-reading, last-minute studying and that’s where active recall learning and space retrieval comes in. Active recall, is an approach that is rooted in retrieval practice where it offers a more effective alternative for developing writing skills. While, space retrieval is scheduling of those retrieval activities over time which involves using flashcards, introduces learners to newly presented and more difficult words, while previously practiced and less difficult words (as defined by the system as having been sufficiently learned) are not displayed as often.(Mueller & Hays, 2022) In this juncture, we will discuss, describe, analyze, and evaluate how these two approaches work together in learning to write.

Active recall is an approach that is defined as retrieving information rather than passively viewing. For instance, in reading a model essay, some learners write the important parts of it such as introduction, specifically hook, background information, and a clear thesis statement then reconstruct its structure from memory. According to Roediger and Karpicke students who used retrieval practice retained significantly more information over time compared to students who simply re-studied material. This is often called the "testing effect" — the act of being tested on material actually strengthens memory more than additional study does.

Whereas, space retrieval also known as space repetition is a distributed practice over increasing time intervals rather than cramming. For example, case study consists of two topics, specifically the importance of L1 or what we call your first language and the advantages in the present and in the future. In writing, you're in the part of Drafting (Building and Checking) where you start gathering information that might be needed in your paper . In order for you not to get overwhelmed, you will schedule the time when you have a break (e.g Day 1 work,, then again in 2 days break, and so forth) and create again. In this way, you accomplish this before the deadline without feeling bombarded and crammed. Based on the study of Ebbinghaus's Forgetting Curve, it shows that without space practice, memory decays rapidly.

In analyzing the course concepts, both are forced to monitor what you know and don't know which is implied to metacognition which builds self-awareness and directly improves a writer's ability to self-edit. Moreover, it describes an active learning process where it requires intentional effort and leads to feedback loops recalling and checking creates immediate feedback. These both approaches might feel harder, but they produces stronger learning by being organized on how you will practice (Active Recall) and setting a time when you will practice (Space Retrieval).Together they fight the forgetting curve while building deep, durable writing knowledge. A writer using both would recall writing strategies regularly over time rather than cramming before an assignment. Hence, active recall and space retrieval helps to shift learners from passive to active learning process, and develop a study habit by building writing skills that last beyond a single assignment.
