ql-align-justify">In today’s digital learning environments, the concept of multimodal knowledge representations has become essential. Educators increasingly combine text, images, video, and interactive media to enhance understanding. Yet, one often overlooked dimension of multimodal learning is the deliberate integration of multiple human senses beyond sight and sound. I propose the concept of Sensory-Integrated Learning (SIL), which engages multiple senses—visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, olfactory, and sometimes gustatory—to deepen comprehension and support long-term memory. Sensory-Integrated Learning represents a natural evolution of multiliteracies and digital media approaches, extending multimodal pedagogy into embodied and experiential modalities. Sensory-Integrated Learning can be defined as a pedagogical approach that combines two or more sensory modalities in the design of learning experiences, enabling learners to encode knowledge more richly and retrieve it more effectively through multisensory cues. While visual and auditory channels are dominant in most e-learning designs, incorporating touch, movement, and even smell can strengthen learning outcomes by activating additional cognitive pathways. Research in embodied cognition and multisensory processing supports the notion that multisensory experiences improve retention and conceptual understanding (Shams & Seitz, 2008)

A practical illustration of SIL is a virtual biology lab simulation. Students studying plant anatomy may use a digital platform that combines traditional diagrams and narrated instructions with haptic devices that simulate textures, interactive 3D models, and even scent simulations representing different plant species. This approach allows learners to physically manipulate virtual specimens, enhancing engagement and comprehension in ways that purely visual or auditory media cannot. Studies have shown that such immersive, multisensory interactions improve recall and deepen conceptual learning (Multisensory Virtual Learning Environments, 2018).

Sensory-Integrated Learning offers a powerful expansion of multimodal knowledge representations. By engaging multiple senses, educators can design experiences that are more immersive, inclusive, and effective. SIL not only complements existing strategies such as video learning, simulations, and learning games, but also encourages innovation in e-learning environments by leveraging the full spectrum of human perception. Introducing SIL into the e-Learning Ecologies community can inspire new methods for creating engaging and memorable learning experiences, ensuring that knowledge is not only presented but deeply felt.
