Introduction: Why Literacies Learning Resources Must Evolve

At a moment when citizens are bombarded daily with algorithmically sorted news feeds, viral misinformation, AI-generated content, and deeply partisan media ecosystems, the question of how to teach people to read their information environment critically has never been more urgent. Traditional literacy instruction — focused primarily on decoding print texts and composing in standard academic registers — is insufficient preparation for this landscape. What is needed are learning resources that are as dynamic, multimodal, and contextually embedded as the information environments they seek to illuminate. One resource that has emerged as a genuinely innovative response to this challenge is Checkology, the free virtual classroom developed by the News Literacy Project (NLP), a Washington D.C.-based nonpartisan nonprofit founded in 2008.

Describing the Resource: What Checkology Is and How It Works

Launched in 2016 and continuously updated since, Checkology is a browser-based, e-learning platform designed for students in grades five through twelve. It is free for educators and students, and is accessible via any internet-connected device. The platform hosts a library of interactive multimedia lessons hosted by practising journalists and subject-matter experts from organisations including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and BuzzFeed News, giving the resource an authentic connection to real-world professional practice that distinguishes it from conventional textbook-based approaches.

The platform is organised around key news literacy topics, with individual lesson modules on subjects including: misinformation and disinformation; conspiratorial thinking; understanding algorithmic curation; media bias and perspective; the role and ethics of journalism; data literacy; the First Amendment and press freedom; and, most recently, generative AI and its implications for information credibility. Each lesson combines video explainers, interactive activities, discussion prompts, and student challenges. A "Check Center" allows learners to practise evaluating the credibility of real pieces of content using the "Quick Check" tool — moving the learning from abstract principle to situated, applied practice. A "Word Wall" provides vocabulary support, filterable by lesson, while an "InfoZones" framework teaches students to identify the primary purpose of any piece of information: is it news, opinion, entertainment, advertising, propaganda, or raw information? These distinctions are foundational to critical reading in any medium.

For teachers, Checkology provides a class management system through which they can assign specific lessons, monitor student progress, build pre- and post-assessments, set up discussion walls, and even schedule virtual "Newsroom to Classroom" visits from journalist volunteers. In 2024-25, the platform was used by educators across thousands of classrooms, and has won numerous awards including a Webby People's Voice Award in 2024 in the category of Responsible Information — recognising its work to "combat disinformation, misinformation and false or misleading information online" — and HundrED's 2019 Spotlight on Digital Wellbeing innovation award.

What Makes Checkology Innovative?

The question of what constitutes genuine innovation in a literacy learning resource requires more than noting that a resource is digital, interactive, or freely available. Many educational technologies tick those boxes without meaningfully advancing how literacy is conceived or taught. Checkology's innovation, I would argue, is more substantive — it lies in its reconceptualisation of what counts as a literacy text, the pedagogical model it embodies, its embrace of authentic practice over simulation, and its integration of civic purpose into the curriculum itself.

First, Checkology treats the news and information ecosystem itself as the primary text. Rather than using a static anthology or set of pre-selected readings, the platform embeds live, real-world media examples into its lessons and tools. The Quick Check feature asks students to evaluate actual pieces of content circulating online — not sanitised, pre-vetted classroom versions. This is consistent with what Brian Street called an "ideological" rather than "autonomous" model of literacy: literacy is not a decontextualised skill applied to neutral texts, but a socially embedded practice enacted on real, contested, power-laden communication. Checkology takes this seriously by refusing to pretend that the media environment is cleaner or simpler than it actually is.

Third, Checkology innovates by embedding professional practice into the learning experience. The lessons are not taught by curriculum writers or generic educators speaking abstractly about "journalism"; they are taught by practising journalists from major newsrooms who explain, demonstrate, and model the actual cognitive and ethical processes of news production and verification. This brings learners into direct contact with professional discourse communities — a hallmark of effective new literacies pedagogy. Critics of the checklist-based source evaluation approach — echoed even in Common Sense Education's review of Checkology — note that teaching students to assess credibility via a fixed procedure risks an over-reliance on surface heuristics rather than deeper structural analysis of how media institutions, ownership, and economic incentives shape information. Checkology's newer modules on algorithms and generative AI suggest the platform is responsive to this critique, moving towards systemic analysis rather than individual source verification.

For literacy educators, Checkology represents a compelling model of what an innovative learning resource can look like: free, accessible, multimodal, practice-embedded, civically purposeful, and continuously updated in response to a changing information environment. It does not replace the critical, dialogic work of the classroom — and its designers are clear that it should not — but it provides an exceptionally rich platform for doing that work in a way that honours the complexity and urgency of twenty-first century literacies. The challenge for educators is to move beyond the platform as content delivery and into the deeper pedagogical work of connecting its lessons to students' own information lives, communities, and civic possibilities.
