The prospect of prioritizing fundamental areas such as reading, mathematics, and the development of core values was promising. Many educators have felt the strain of an overloaded curriculum, which often resulted in a hurried attempt to address all required topics.

However, several questions emerged regarding the extent of the changes. I considered whether significant adjustments to my lesson plans would be necessary and whether students would be able to adapt to the new structure.

Initial Training and Implementation

The first notable change involved the training sessions organized by DepEd. These seminars focused on the objectives and strategies of the new curriculum. Initially, the volume of information presented was considerable, and I was concerned about how to implement these changes effectively. Nevertheless, the trainers provided substantial support and clarified that the primary aim was to enhance both the effectiveness and enjoyment of learning for students.

Classroom Experience with the MATATAG Curriculum

Currently, I am teaching Grade 4, and the MATATAG curriculum is fully implemented. The most significant change I have observed is the reduction in content. There is no longer an emphasis on covering an excessive amount of material. Instead, the focus is on establishing a solid foundation in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Language Arts: Greater attention is given to reading comprehension and vocabulary development. Lessons incorporate stories and activities designed to improve students’ understanding and ability to express themselves.
Mathematics: Instruction centers on problem-solving and critical thinking skills, moving away from rote memorization of formulas.

Another important aspect is the integration of values such as makabansa and good manners and right conduct. These principles are embedded within lessons to help students appreciate the responsibilities and values of being a Filipino citizen.

Challenges and Adjustments

There have been challenges during the transition. Some students initially found it difficult to adjust, as they were accustomed to memorizing information rather than engaging in critical thinking. With consistent support and guidance, however, many have begun to adapt to the new approach.

Conclusion

Overall, my experience with the MATATAG curriculum has been positive. It has enabled me to concentrate on essential skills and values that are fundamental to student development. While the curriculum is not without its challenges, it represents a constructive step forward for education in the Philippines.
