We need to understand the messages hidden beneath the surface, to question who is speaking, why they are speaking, and whose voices might be left out. This is where critical literacy pedagogy comes in, empowering students to become thoughtful and engaged citizens.

A compelling example of critical literacy in practice can be found in a study where teachers used Twitter to help eleventh-grade students analyze American Transcendentalist literature (Kunnath & Jackson, 2019). In this classroom activity, students used their phones to research, communicate, and interact on Twitter, exploring texts with a critical lens. Instead of just understanding the plot or characters, they examined how language shaped ideas, power dynamics, and social issues within the literature and its contemporary interpretations. This approach encourages students to look beyond the literal meaning of words and consider the broader context and implications of what they read.

The strengths of this approach are significant. It leverages a familiar platform (Twitter) to engage students actively, making learning relevant to their digital lives. By analyzing various perspectives and biases in the texts, students develop a deeper understanding of how authors construct meaning and influence readers. This method also fosters what researchers call "critical consciousness," meaning students become more aware of social injustices and how language can be used to challenge or uphold them. However, a potential weakness could be the risk of students getting sidetracked by the social media platform itself, or the need for careful teacher guidance to ensure discussions remain focused and productive. Additionally, not all students may have equal access to or comfort with using social media in an academic setting.

Comparing critical literacy pedagogy with functional literacy pedagogy reveals distinct differences in their goals and methods. Functional literacy primarily focuses on teaching students the basic skills needed to navigate everyday life—like reading signs, filling out forms, or understanding instructions. It emphasizes decoding words and literal comprehension, aiming for students to be productive members of society. For example, a functional literacy lesson might involve students reading a recipe and then following the steps to bake a cake. The goal is to successfully complete a task by understanding the explicit instructions.

In contrast, critical literacy goes "beyond the page." While functional literacy teaches how to read, critical literacy teaches students how to read critically. Critical literacy encourages students to question texts, challenge assumptions, and consider alternative viewpoints. It recognizes that every text carries biases and reflects certain power structures. Instead of just understanding a recipe, a critically literate student might ask: Who created this recipe? What cultural background does it come from? Are certain ingredients inaccessible to some people? What message does this recipe subtly convey about food or health?

The key difference lies in their approach to texts. Functional literacy views texts as neutral sources of information, while critical literacy sees them as social constructs that reflect specific perspectives and ideologies. Both are important, but critical literacy empowers students to be active shapers of their world rather than just passive consumers of information.
