ql-align-justify">Education is often described as the backbone of national progress, but within ASEAN it is also framed as the bridge to regional resilience and competitiveness. Examining how political rhetoric sets social objectives for education reveals both the promise of transformation and the challenge of turning vision into practice.

The ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community emphasizes that “inclusive and quality education is key to the sustainable development of the region. It prepares ASEAN’s human resources to be resilient, competitive and ready to face an ever-changing future” (ASEAN, 2025). This rhetoric positions education as a transformative force for regional development, highlighting resilience and competitiveness as essential social objectives. Such goals resonate with authentic pedagogy, which values learner agency and real-world problem-solving according to Deyasi et al., 2020. The statement provides a visionary framework that situates education as both a personal benefit and a collective necessity for ASEAN integration.

Despite its aspirational tone, rhetoric lacks specificity in terms of classroom-level implementation. Authentic pedagogy requires concrete strategies that foster higher-order thinking, collaboration, and meaningful engagement with real-world contexts based on National Education Policy [NEP], 2020. The ASEAN statement does not provide actionable guidance for teachers, such as curriculum design, assessment models, or pedagogical practices that translate resilience and competitiveness into authentic learning tasks. Without these details, the rhetoric risks remain symbolic, offering broad ideals without the substance necessary to transform classroom practice.

Reflecting on this rhetoric through the lens of authentic pedagogy reveals both promise and limitation. The vision of inclusive, quality education as a driver of sustainable development is compelling, yet its effectiveness depends on how educators translate these broad goals into classroom practice across diverse ASEAN contexts. From my perspective, authentic pedagogy thrives when learners engage in tasks that mirror real-world challenges, empowering them to become active participants in society. For ASEAN’s rhetoric to move beyond aspiration, it must be accompanied by policies and frameworks that support teachers in designing authentic, learner-centered experiences. Ultimately, aligning this rhetoric with ASEAN’s broader education reform goals requires bridging the gap between visionary policy and classroom practice, ensuring that authentic pedagogy becomes a lived reality across the region.

In connecting ASEAN’s contemporary rhetoric with Rizal’s enduring philosophy, we see that true reform lies not in lofty declarations alone, but in the lived practice of authentic pedagogy that empowers communities and strengthens the nation.
