Didactic pedagogy, in simple terms, is when I take the central role in delivering knowledge while my students listen, take notes, and absorb information. It is teacher-centered and focused on direct instruction.

For example, when I teach grammar—such as subject-verb agreement or the proper use of tenses—I usually begin with a clear explanation at the board. I define the rule, give structured examples, and ask students to copy notes. After that, I provide drills or short exercises where they apply the rule exactly as taught. In this moment, I am the main source of knowledge, and the students follow my explanation step by step. This is a clear example of didactic pedagogy in today’s English class.

From my experience, this approach is appropriate when students need foundational knowledge. When my learners are confused about sentence structure or punctuation, they benefit from direct, explicit instruction. It is also appropriate when preparing them for exams where mastery of rules is necessary. In these situations, clarity, authority, and structure help them feel secure and guided.

However, I also notice that didactic pedagogy becomes anachronistic when I rely on it too much. For example, when teaching literature, if I simply lecture about the meaning of a poem and tell students what the symbols represent, I limit their interpretation and creativity. English is not only about rules; it is also about expression, critical thinking, and personal voice. If students only listen and memorize my interpretation, they do not fully engage with the text.
