This critical literacy activity allows students to promote empathy and understand overlooked characters. It enhances their interpretive skills to deeply understand how meaning changes. Furthermore, not only it enhances their critical thinking but also their creative thinking which encourages them to make their learning interactive and produce meaningful work. Moreover, it helps students’ to recognize how stories can represent the community or society — it allows them to raise awareness of power.

However, this activity has limitations. Not all students can think critically or creatively, therefore writing practice during the class discussion might be challenging from some students. It is a time-consuming activity, because students are creating or producing a work — so they might find it difficult to finish rewriting the story on time. Additionally, without clear guidance, students may only focus on creativity, not critical analysis. Students’ might unintentionally focus on finishing the activity on time, rather than critically analyze the story.

Critical and functional literacy teaching both develops comprehension skills. Enabling students’ to analyze the original text before writing their own story. It improves their writing skills, aiming to prepare students for real-world communication. However, critical literacy focuses on how students question the text, while functional literacy focuses on how students’ understand the text correctly. In other words, critical literacy highlights how to make meaning, and functional literacy emphasizes how students’ can apply literacy for real-life tasks.
