The core of the Process Writing approach is the belief that students should write like “real” authors. Instead of being handed a prompt and a deadline for a single, perfect draft, students engage in a recursive cycle like pre-writing, brainstorming, drafting, revising, and publishing. A hallmark of this method is the “Writing Conference,” where the teacher or a peer acts as an active listener, asking open-ended questions to help the writer clarify their own thoughts. The focus is on the student’s “voice” and the authenticity of their message rather than the immediate mechanics of spelling or punctuation. Unlike the Didactic literacy pedagogy that is centered on the “correctness” of the final product and teacher-led, Authentic pedagogy through Process Writing is student-centered. Errors are viewed as “miscues” or natural developmental steps rather than failure.

The primary strength of this approach is the high level of learner agency. When students choose their own topics and write for a real audience, their motivation increases. Though, this approach may have a notable weakness as well.
