I wanted to share my ideas on didactic pedagogy—the conventional "teacher talks, students listen" approach—and how it is used nowadays.

A straightforward current example is a university physics lecture on Newton's Laws. The lecturer teaches the fundamentals step by step, working through example problems while the students take notes. This technique is mostly teacher-centered, which is precisely what we mean by didactic.

So, when does this actually make sense? I think didactic teaching is super useful when:

We’re laying foundational knowledge—like formulas, rules, or procedures.
Classes are large, making individualized instruction tricky.
Accuracy really matters—think lab safety or medical procedures.

Check out MIT OpenCourseWare’s classical mechanics lecture (https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/physics/8-01sc-classical-mechanics-fall-2016/) as a great example. The instructor walks students through step-by-step, very didactic!

However, let's be honest: didactic approaches might feel outmoded in some circumstances. Purely lecture-based techniques can inhibit creativity and critical thinking, particularly in disciplines that need teamwork or hands-on learning. Think about project-based learning, coding seminars, and art classes. Even Khan Academy demonstrates a more learner-paced, participatory approach that goes beyond rigid didactic education.

So, ultimately, didactic education is not "bad", it simply has to be used strategically. It works best for essentials and clarity, but more participatory approaches are required for creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving.
