In today’s literary education, there have been changes from a teacher-centered approach towards more engaging and collaborative learning, and learner-centered approaches. One example of an authentic literacy pedagogy is Outcome-Based Education (OBE), which highlights the meaningful learning and practical application skills in the real-world. At this juncture, I will explain the OBE as one example of an authentic literacy pedagogy. OBE focuses on the product or output of the learners as they immerse themselves through instructional materials and textbooks, providing opportunities for them to learn and explore the topics either individually or along with their peers by doing activities such as guided instructions, assessments, and projects. In literacy instruction, this approach prioritizes the ability of the students to use language more effectively in authentic contexts.

For instance, a professor gives an activity and provided by sentence starter in a google docs serves as a guide, where the students must resolve the problem of plagiarism by creating a persuasive speech and presenting in front. At the end of the presentation, some of the students will give their constructive feedback, while the professor will facilitate and evaluate the learners’ performance. The example above demonstrates how OBE works by aligning with clearly defined outcomes (e.g., writing a persuasive essay, analyzing a literary text, or participating in discussions). Assessment is performance-based, often involving portfolios, projects, reflections, and process writing rather than grammar drills alone. This is signified on “learning by doing” by John Dewey’s progressivism theory, which accompanies social interaction and teamwork, focusing on human experience as the basis for knowledge.

One of the key strengths of OBE is that learners have autonomy and take responsibility for their own learning, such as being aware of their learning goals and monitoring their progress, while the teacher acts as a facilitator. Moreover, it is associated with differentiated learning as the learners have the freedom to choose their own pathways in achieving their outcomes. However, it should be carefully planned and well-aligned between outcomes, instruction, and assessment. Without the mastery of a teacher, OBE risks meeting outcomes without deep learning, where the performance is more prioritized than fully grasping the subject matter. In addition, there might be a time constraint, which typically happens in the teaching and learning process because of the large class size that may lead to limiting the effectiveness of implementation, depending on the activities and topics as they plan the learning objectives, which compromise cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. What makes it different in didactic pedagogy is that OBE focuses more on the learners’ needs, ensuring that the learning activities are designed to help them achieve specific outcomes, and the outcomes are often designed to be relevant to real-world situations, which are related to PBL or Problem-based learning. Unlike didactic pedagogy, literacy is more teacher-centered and is more authoritative in a way that tells students things and expects them to listen, where the key features are explicit instructions, focus on facts, memorization, and one-way flow.

Hence, by putting a strong emphasis on meaningful learning, practical application, and active student engagement, outcome-based education is an outstanding example of an authentic literacy pedagogy. Through performance-based and cooperative assignments, OBE empowers learners to take charge of their literacy development by changing the teacher's role from one of authority to one of facilitator. It has advantages, but in order to prevent shallow learning, it necessitates careful alignment of outcomes, instruction, and assessment. OBE provides a more learner-centered and context-driven approach than didactic pedagogy, better preparing students for real-world language use outside of the classroom.
