One notable shift is the increased emphasis on outdoor and nature-based learning, which has become a central part of many preschool programs. While classrooms used to focus heavily on structured indoor activities, there is now a stronger understanding that young children benefit from hands-on exploration in outdoor environments.

For example, in my classroom, we started a “nature discovery program”, where children explore plants, insects, and weather patterns, then document their observations through drawings, photos, or group discussions. This approach encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and social interaction while connecting learning to the natural world.

This change reflects broader trends in early childhood education:

Moving from teacher-led, didactic instruction to child-centered, inquiry-based learning.
Integrating real-world contexts that make learning meaningful.
Supporting physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development simultaneously.

Research supports this trend. According to White (2018), outdoor learning improves creativity, attention, and collaboration skills in young children. Similarly, NAEYC (2020) emphasizes that developmentally appropriate practice includes play, exploration, and connecting learning to the child’s world.
