Before reading, our teacher introduced key vocabulary words, sometimes translating them into Filipino to ensure understanding. During reading, we read aloud by paragraph or by group, which helped build fluency. After reading, we answered comprehension questions that checked literal, inferential, and evaluative understanding. This routine reflects the strength of the basal approach: it combines phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension in one structured program.

In terms of pedagogy, the approach emphasized the written mode of language. We were taught phonics explicitly, learning how the 26 letters of the English alphabet represent many different sounds. We practiced identifying phonemes, vowels, and consonants, and we learned that written English does not always sound the way it looks.
