ql-align-justify">Virtual Reality (VR) is an emerging media technology that has significant implications for communication, education, and human meaning-making. VR refers to computer-generated environments that allow users to interact with simulated spaces using visual, auditory, and sometimes haptic feedback. Through headsets and motion controllers, users experience immersive environments that engage multiple senses simultaneously. From a Multiliteracies perspective, VR is a highly multimodal environment where meaning is constructed through the integration of visual, spatial, gestural, linguistic, and auditory modes.

Unlike traditional media, VR places users inside the text rather than positioning them as passive observers. Meaning is shaped by spatial movement, perspective, and embodied interaction. For example, a VR history simulation allows learners to explore historical settings by walking through them, listening to narrated explanations, reading embedded text, and interacting with objects. These combined modes support experiential learning and deepen comprehension. According to the Multiliteracies framework, such environments emphasize design, agency, and active participation in meaning-making (New London Group, 1996).

The implications of VR for human meaning-making are profound. VR encourages learners to construct understanding through experience rather than linear reading. It supports diverse learning styles and can be especially beneficial for students who struggle with text-based instruction. However, it also challenges traditional definitions of literacy, as users must interpret spatial cues, gestures, and interactive elements. Understanding VR as a multimodal literacy environment highlights the need for education systems to expand what counts as literacy in the digital age.
