The Philippine Context: From "Correcting" to "Creating"

In many traditional Filipino classrooms, writing is often treated as a test of grammar and spelling. Students are typically asked to write an essay in 40 minutes, and the teacher simply grades it with a score based on errors. This is a didactic approach. However, Process Writing introduces an Authentic Pedagogy where students are treated as real authors. In this method, students go through a cycle: Pre-writing (brainstorming in groups), Drafting, Peer Feedback (checking each other's work), and Final Revision. This aligns with the "Meaning-Making" goal of the Multiliteracies framework, where the focus is on how well the student communicates their message to a real audience.

Strengths: Improving Filipino Students' Expression

Peer Collaboration: Filipino culture is very social. Process Writing uses this by encouraging Peer Review. When students read each other's work, they practice "Social Diversity" and learn to give constructive feedback in a way that feels like a conversation rather than a critique.

Developing Voice: Instead of just copying "model essays," Process Writing gives Filipino students the space to use their own "Voice." This is crucial for Situated Practice, where learners use their local experiences and home languages to build their English or Filipino writing skills.

Reducing Writing Anxiety: Many students in the Philippines are afraid of making grammatical mistakes. Because Process Writing allows for multiple drafts, students feel safer to take risks and experiment with their ideas before receiving a final grade.

Limitations: Class Size and Teacher Workload

Overcrowded Classrooms: In public schools with 50+ students, it is very difficult for a teacher to give detailed feedback on three different drafts for every student. This is why many still prefer the fast, didactic "one-shot" writing method.

Time Constraints: With the busy school calendar and many extra-curricular activities in the Philippines, finding two weeks to finish one writing project is a challenge. Teachers often feel pressured to "finish the book" rather than "master the process."

Conclusion

For the Philippines to overcome "Learning Poverty," we must move away from just memorizing grammar rules. Process Writing offers a path toward Authentic Literacy. Even with large classes, using "Peer Feedback" can help teachers manage the workload while still giving students the chance to be "Designers" of their own stories. This prepares them for the real world, where writing is always a process of drafting, refining, and collaborating.
