The goals set for schools often reflect larger social and political priorities, and as a teacher, I feel that weight inside the classroom. With the strong push for technology and “21st-century skills,” I’ve noticed how learning sometimes becomes more about speed, output, and performance than understanding. I see students who can quickly look up answers or create polished digital outputs, yet hesitate when asked to explain their own ideas or reflect deeply. It made me realize that teaching English today means constantly negotiating between helping students keep up with modern demands and reminding them that thinking, reading, and writing well still take time.

This connects closely with DepEd Philippines Vision Statement (K to 12 Program) “The Department of Education envisions Filipino learners who are critically thinking, creative, collaborative, and communicative — ready for a knowledge economy driven by technology and innovation.” On paper, these goals sound ideal, and I do believe in them. However, in practice, the emphasis often leans heavily toward measurable skills and digital competence. As an English teacher, I sometimes feel the pressure to focus more on outputs, presentations, online activities, and assessments than on the quieter but more meaningful parts of learning, like struggling with a text, finding one’s voice, or forming an honest opinion.

These realities have made me more reflective about my role as a teacher. I’ve come to see that while policies and technology shape the direction of education, it’s still the teacher who shapes the experience. My challenge is to help students meet modern expectations without losing the human side of language learning. In these interesting times, teaching English has become an act of balance between innovation and reflection, efficiency and depth, progress and purpose.
