Now, we start with a phenomenon: a time-lapse video showing the rapid growth of an algal bloom in a nearby lake. I ask, “What’s happening here, and what would you need to know to explain it?” Students identify their own questions—about nutrients, water chemistry, climate, local agriculture—and work in teams to design investigations. Some reach out to local water authorities for data; others build small mesocosms to test variables.

This is transformative in the sense Paulo Freire spoke of: it shifts students from passive recipients of a “banking” model of education to co-investigators of their world. The curriculum isn’t imposed; it emerges from a real problem. My role transforms from the authority with answers to a facilitator of critical thinking and ethical consideration—we don’t just study eutrophication; we discuss who is responsible and what actionable steps might look like.

The transformation isn’t merely in method, but in purpose: education becomes a tool for consciousness and agency, empowering students to see science not as a textbook chapter, but as a lens for understanding—and potentially improving—their own community.
