As both a student (in lifelong learning) and an educator, the most profound change I’ve experienced is the dissolution of the classroom’s physical and temporal boundaries- and the double-edged sword that comes with it.

Autobiographically, I taught university writing seminars a decade ago. The “classroom” was a sealed container: four walls, a set meeting time, and my physical presence as the focal point. Fast forward to now, when I recently completed a professional certification course. My “classroom” was a hybrid vortex: pre-recorded lectures I watched at 1.5x speed at night, a cohort Slack channel buzzing across three time zones, two live Zoom workshops where attendees multitasked invisibly, and all assignments submitted to an AI-aware platform that checked for originality.

The stand-out idea this crystallized for me is that education is no longer primarily about access to information, but about curating attention and cultivating discernment, When the lecture is always available, the live session must be for something else—synthesis, debate, human connection. The educator’s role is shifting from content-deliverer to experience-architect and critical guide.

A challenging example: I recently saw a student in a forum brilliantly synthesize a complex theory with a current event. When asked, they credited not the course materials, but a YouTube deep-dive and an AI tutor that helped them “test” their understanding through debate. The learning was real and deep, but it radically bypassed the provided curriculum. This forces me to ask: What is the core value of the “course” now? Is it a credential, a community, a curated pathway through chaos?
