...MoreDr. Wanja Gitari is an associate professor of science education at the University of Toronto. She is cross appointed between the Transitional Year Programme and the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT). Some of Professor Gitari's funded research has investigated the relationship between certain elements of everyday knowledge of natural phenomena and the content of school science. The overall goal in her research and teaching is to inquire into and engage with the broad problem of equity and access to academic science for students from traditionally under-represented and underachieving communities. Her recent selected publications include a co-authored paper in 2014 with Dr. Isha Decoito, Outreach programs: A case for indigenizing science education curriculum. First Nations Perspectives: The Journal of the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre Inc., Vol.6; and a sole authored book chapter in 2012, Engaging scientific activities to build endogenous science and lay foundation for the improvement of living conditions in Africa.
