I teach linguistic field methods, discourse analysis, and sociolinguistics at San Francisco State University. One of my areas of interest is in the preservation and documentation of endangered languages around the world. I work currently working in central Mexico with Zapotec communities, but have worked in Africa, as well. I am particularly interested in verbal art and oral tradition. A great deal of my work has focused on the structure and meaning of verbal art in indigenous communities. I am also currently involved in developing community-based participatory action research projects involving indigenous communities from Mexico who reside the Bay Area.
