As a professor of Early Childhood Education I teach undergraduates in a PK-3rd grade teacher-education program. My teaching interests are primarily in effective assessment of young children and teacher’s professional identity. I also review early childhood teacher education programs across the country. My research is in the area of developmentally appropriate practice, with a focus on teaching practices that are appropriate for the learning context. For me, the learning context includes the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual environments. I believe educators are most effective when they consider all elements of culture and context in their decision-making about what and how to teach. In my scholarship, I have written about the use of Pokémon and children’s cultures in the primary classroom, the integration of environmental stewardship into primary-grade curricula, and have most recently written about the relationship between school and non-school support of children’s development, with a particular interest in the continuity of beliefs and practices between home and school.
