I arrived in New Zealand in 1997 from California where I was a Spanish Immersion primary school teacher. I worked as a research assistant and guest lecturer at the University of Otago from 1999. I completed my doctorate at Otago in 2004 entitled 'Teacher education and social justice: Theorising professional practice' and was appointed as a lecturer that same year. I currently teach across a number of undergraduate and postgraduate papers. My most recently completed research programme was a collaborative self-study into the development and implementation of critical literacy practices in primary and secondary schools. My research interests include critical literacy and multiliteracies, social justice in education, gender equity, teacher education and educational policy.
