My name is Simphiwe Laura Stewart. I am a 22 year old, female, from the Kingdom of Swaziland. I hold a Masters in Environmental Law from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. Currently, I am participating in the Community Environmental and Human Health Research Participation Program at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 10 (Seattle) My background in environmental justice, community organizing and outreach began with working on a citizen science project for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) through Yonge Nawe Environmental Action Group, Swaziland. Currently, my research focus is geared towards supporting and evaluating the use of citizen science tools by underserved communities. A rising number of communities faced with exposure to environmental stressors such as transit, exposure to pollutants, water issues and a call to clean up contaminated soil and sediment, led the EPA to develop a distinct scientific tool, the Community Focused Exposure and Risk Screening Tool (C-FERST) My research will take me into communities including Tacoma, Washington and Portland, Oregon. In communities with EJ concerns this tool will be vital in painting a fuller picture of persisting social, environmental and public health issues to ultimately create more sustainable and healthy communities.
