He is a Mining Engineer with over 20 years of experience in research and mining projects in three countries/continents: Turkey, South Africa and Australia respectively. After working as a Research Assistant in Dokuz Eylul University (Turkey) where he completed his research-based Masters Degree and PhD, he spent 4 years in South Africa between 2002 and 2006: 1 year as Post Doctorate Fellow at the University of Witwatersrand and 3 years as a Project Manager in South Africa. In 2006, he joined UNSW’s School of Mining Engineering as a Senior Lecturer and in 2011 he has been promoted to the Associate Professor level. In addition to his academic roles in the School, he is deputy director of research and academic coordinator of undergraduate scholarships. He is member of over 10 local and international committees. He has 92 research publications. Throughout his career, he has been recognised for his strong research performance in leading multidisciplinary research projects and has been awarded 4 teaching excellence awards. He successfully chaired four international conferences and currently chairing of two international conferences which will be held in 2014 and 2015. His fields of research interest include Geomechanics (Ground Support), Mine Planning & Design, Project Management, Collaborative Learning & Teaching, Using Gaming Technology and Virtual Reality in Decision Making in Engineering and Peer Assessment.
