Sam von Gillern is a Ph.D. candidate in Literacy Education at Iowa State University. He has experience teaching students ranging from preschool children to college students. One of this primary research interests is on using games in educational settings to promote learning and engagement. He believes this is an important area for research as many children, even those disenchanted with school, love games, and teachers should harness their students' passion for games in their teaching to facilitate learning. Additionally, he is interested in how people learn and communicate through multimodal texts. As much of modern communication utilizes not only the written word, but also visual, auditory, and gestural communication, he aims to help teachers find ways to integrate multimodal texts and tools into their teaching to help all students succeed.
